UN Goals & Sustainability

Our Dedication to Having a Meaningful Impact

Tourism can uplift or harm communities. At Panama San Blas Tours, we choose the former.

Our approach to responsible tourism aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that our presence in the San Blas Islands contributes positively to people, culture, and nature. Rather than extracting value, we focus on partnership, empowerment, and long-term sustainability.

Supporting Gender Equality (SDG 5)

Gender equality is deeply rooted in Guna culture, where women traditionally hold leadership roles within families and communities. We honour this heritage by intentionally supporting women-led islands and businesses.

Through our tours, travellers have the opportunity to meet Guna women artisans, learn about their work, and purchase handcrafted molas and textiles directly from the creators. This model promotes financial independence while preserving cultural identity and traditional skills passed down through generations.

Strengthening Sustainable Communities (SDG 11)

We believe that tourism should enhance local life, not disrupt it.

All of our tours are operated by local guides, boat captains, drivers, and island hosts, ensuring that income remains within the community. We act as a connector – not an owner – allowing local partners to maintain autonomy over their land, businesses, and traditions.

Our social initiatives, including annual community celebrations and material support for families, reflect our long-term commitment to the people of Guna Yala. By helping local partners access equipment and infrastructure, we support sustainable growth without dependency.

Protecting Life Below Water (SDG 14)

San Blas is one of the Caribbean’s most pristine marine environments, and protecting it is essential to the future of the islands.

We minimise environmental impact by reducing plastic use, managing waste responsibly, and educating both staff and guests about marine conservation. Guests are encouraged to actively participate in keeping the islands and waters clean, reinforcing shared responsibility for preservation.

Responsible Tourism, Done Right

Our commitment goes beyond checklists and certifications. It is a part of every decision we make: from whom we work with to how we operate to how we welcome visitors to Guna communities.

By choosing Panama San Blas Tours, travellers support a model of tourism that is ethical, community-led, and environmentally conscious – one that protects the San Blas Islands while ensuring their people continue to thrive.
