At Panama San Blas Tours, sustainability is not a trend but the very foundation of how we operate. As a female-led, socially responsible tour operator, we are committed to creating travel experiences that benefit local people, protect the environment, and respect cultural boundaries.
Our work is guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on Gender Equality, Sustainable Communities, and Life Below Water. Every San Blas Tour we run is designed to ensure that tourism remains a positive force for the Guna Yala region and the San Blas Islands.
We believe that empowering women strengthens families, communities, and cultures. The Guna society is traditionally matriarchal, and we are proud to support and amplify women’s leadership within the islands.
We actively prioritise working with islands owned or managed by female leaders, ensuring balanced participation between women and men across our operations. We also support women’s economic independence by promoting and selling locally made handicrafts, including molas, masks, bracelets, and other unique pieces crafted by Guna women artisans.
By creating direct access to visitors, we help women earn income on their own terms, preserving ancestral skills while strengthening household economies.
Our tours are designed to strengthen – not replace – local livelihoods. 100% of our island staff are local, and the vast majority of the income generated by our tours stays within the Guna community. We take only a small commission to connect this extraordinary destination with the wider world.
Beyond daily operations, we actively support community wellbeing. Each year, we organise toy donations and Christmas celebrations for the Dibin community in Guna Yala, benefiting more than 50 families.
We also help guides, island owners, and transport providers grow sustainably by facilitating access to essential resources such as boats, vehicles, and island maintenance. In exchange for services and experiences, we provide capital that allows local partners to reinvest, improve infrastructure, and expand responsibly, without external ownership or exploitation.
The ocean is central to life in San Blas, and we take its protection seriously. We ensure that all client-generated waste is transported back to recycling centres in Panama City. During meals, we use reusable plates and cutlery to minimise single-use plastics, and we actively encourage guests to help keep the islands clean.
Our staff regularly participates in awareness talks focused on marine conservation, responsible waste management, and protecting fragile ecosystems — ensuring that sustainability is embedded in everyday practice, not just policy.
Panama San Blas Tours is proud to help reshape tourism by proving that exceptional travel experiences and ethical responsibility can go hand in hand.
Above all, we operate with deep respect for local customs and boundaries. We only go as far as the Guna people wish to share their culture, ensuring that every interaction is based on mutual respect, consent, and authenticity.
Sustainability, for us, means leaving the islands – and their communities – stronger than we found them.
