Panama San Blas Tours Named a Finalist in the 2026 Arival Spotlight Awards

We are proud to share that Panama San Blas Tours has been named a finalist in the Social Purpose / Community Engagement category at the 2026 Arival Spotlight Awards.

The Arival Spotlight Awards celebrate companies helping to shape the tours, activities and attractions industry. Finalists are selected following a review of submissions by a panel of experienced, impartial experts. Our category recognises operators who engage with local communities, support local economies and create opportunities for residents.

For us, this recognition reflects the people, partnerships and everyday work behind the journeys we arrange in the San Blas Islands. It is a moment to celebrate with the local partners who welcome our guests and make these experiences possible.

Guna Yala is an autonomous Indigenous territory, home to communities that shape tourism, care for their islands and decide what they wish to share with visitors. Respecting those decisions has always been central to how we work.

Travel in San Blas Begins With the Guna Community

The San Blas Islands belong to the Guna people. They manage the islands, local boat transport, accommodation and the conditions under which visitors enter and travel through the territory. A visit takes place within their home, following their rules and respecting their way of life.

Our role is to connect travellers with the people who know these islands best. The guides, boat captains, drivers, cooks, island hosts and families involved in our experiences bring the local knowledge that makes each journey possible.

When guests join our San Blas tours, they experience the work behind an island visit: organising transport, preparing meals, welcoming overnight guests and helping travellers find their way around. These contributions are a large part of what this recognition means to us.

Supporting Local Work While Respecting Local Control

Tourism can create opportunities when it respects the people who live in a destination. Panama San Blas Tours works directly with local partners, who retain ownership and control of their islands, boats and businesses.

Our partners provide transfers, boat journeys, accommodation, meals and island services. Tourism income therefore supports local families, while the people involved develop their work in ways that suit their community. We also provide practical hospitality and English-language training where it is helpful.

For travellers, getting to the San Blas Islands involves several stages. Bringing those arrangements together makes the journey easier for guests and connects their visit with the people providing services along the way.

Guna Women and Their Molas

Women play an important role in Guna family life, community life and the passing on of traditional knowledge. Many of the islands we work with are women-led or women-managed, and our tours create opportunities for women artisans to sell their work directly to visitors.

Molas are among the most recognisable expressions of Guna culture. These hand-sewn textile panels are traditionally worn as part of women’s clothing. Their detailed designs reflect skills developed through years of practice and shared across generations.

Buying directly from the woman who made a mola supports her income and recognises the time and craftsmanship behind it. For travellers, meeting the maker also gives the piece a personal connection to their visit. It becomes something they can take home with an understanding of whose work they are holding.

Support That Continues Beyond a Booking

Our work supporting the Guna community continues beyond the tours themselves. Each year, Panama San Blas Tours contributes to community celebrations, including Christmas gatherings and toy donations for local children and families.

These gatherings are part of relationships built over years of working together. Staying involved means listening to our partners, understanding what is useful and contributing in ways that fit community life.

Caring for the environment is part of that responsibility. The sea provides food, transport and livelihoods, as well as the surroundings visitors come to experience. We use reusable plates and cutlery during meals, take guest-generated waste back to recycling centres in Panama City, and encourage travellers to keep beaches and water free from rubbish.

Our support for women-led businesses, local livelihoods and marine conservation connects with our wider commitments to gender equality, sustainable communities and life below water.

Celebrating Our Partners and Looking Ahead

We thank Arival for this recognition and congratulate our fellow finalists. Above all, we thank the Guna communities, island hosts, drivers, boat captains, guides and artisans whose work shapes every experience we offer. We are also grateful to the guests who choose to travel with us and respect the people and places they visit.

The winners will be announced during the live awards show at Arival 360 in Spokane on Wednesday 14 October 2026, at 4 pm local time in the Arival Theater. We look forward to the announcement and are proud to have reached this stage alongside operators making a positive contribution to their communities.

Whatever the result, our work continues through the same local partnerships that brought us here. Being named a finalist gives us an opportunity to celebrate those relationships and the people behind them.
